The biography of Baltimore-Washington, DC area trucking industry entrepreneur Eugene (Gene) I. Kane, Sr. provides insight to his personal beliefs as a humble man who succeeded at the highest level of an industry fraught with corruption and unsavory practices, while raising a family of nine children. Relying on his deep Catholic faith, commitment to his family and an uncompromising personal integrity, he rose to become a business icon known for his humility and generosity. Through interviews with friends and family, the book presents a candid review of the business and personal challenges Gene navigated as he expanded his transportation empire. From the ignominy of being asked to leave his prominent Jesuit high school during his senior year for failing Latin class, and ultimately enlisting in the US Navy, to being asked by the Cardinal of the Archdiocese of Washington 30 years later to have his family present the gifts to His Holiness Pope John Paul II at the 1979 Papal Mass on the Mall. A historic event televised live internationally as the first modern era Papal visit to the United States. His ethical pursuit of financial stability for his growing family is a must-read read for any ambitious business owner.

"I had the good fortune to know Gene Kane and to teach several of his sons at Our Lady of Good Counsel High School when it was in Wheaton, MD. John, David, Dennis, and Richard attended and graduated, and Dennis captured his Dad's emphasis on appropriate behavior perfectly. Jane and Gene were a fun couple to be around, and they could both be counted on for painfully accurate profiles of their children, they knew them so well. I'm not sure I ever met Gene's equal in generosity. He stunned me in my first year as principal at Good Counsel with a sizeable contribution which he hoped I would use to give the faculty and staff a bonus, which we did. He never once in all the years I knew him asked for anything in return save honesty and your prayers. He is an example still to me of a no nonsense, upright, caring CEO, and he proved to his dying day that you could be that way and succeed quite well. Dennis' book tribute has encouraged me to renew a devotion to Our Lady of Lourdes and to make sure I do not ever lose touch with this family. Gene would have enjoyed this read!"

- Mr. Kane is one of those men that you heard so much about over the years, you thought you knew the story. He had such a large family and so many employees and clients. Everybody had a story. And they all had one thing in common. It seemed like not a day went by that you didn't see a truck, sign or box with his name in blue print. Never an unkind work was spoken about him. Even if you had never met him, you knew his reputation was one of integrity. After reading this book, you will know why.
- We need more stories about people like EI Kane; people who create businesses and jobs are the backbone of this country.
- Very interesting read and well written!
